Use It or Lose It: How to Combat Physical and Mental Atrophy

The Silent Threat of Our Modern Lifestyle

Wake up. Maybe workout. Shower. Drop kids off. Drive to work. Or shuffle to the home office. Sit. Screens. Eat. Sit. Scroll. Screens. Binge watch. Sleep. Repeat.

Days blur. Goals fade.

Potential dims. Relationships suffer.

Is this a snapshot of our lives now?

If so, we need to take a cold plunge and splash our face with ice water.

It’s time to wake up and stop the drift.

We need you, leader.

The Extra Mile

_________________________

Today begins a brand new month.

A new starting line.

How far will you go in the next 31 days?

How hard will you push your F…… limits?

What walls will you break down?

Remember: You’ve got everything you need to become better.

A beating heart.

Breath in your lungs.

Get after it.

Leave no doubts standing.

Cut them all down.

The Extra Mile is Never Crowded.

And it doesn’t take 31 days to go the extra mile.

Today, tomorrow, every day this new month.

Give it your everything.

I think we all want to stop looking at our phones so much, and exchange countless hours of scrolling social media to focus on enhancing our own lives. And commit to being healthier and moving more each day.

Your Action Plan to Stop the Drift Today.

1. Physical Growth: Prioritize Exercise & More Movement.

Cardio

Aim for 15 -45 minutes of daily heart-brain pumping exercise.

Get up and move more throughout the day and evening – especially after dinner if you are sitting too long. Walk around. Do jumping Jacks. Put on some music and dance.

Strength train

2x/week minimum. You have to lift weights if you are able.

Weight lifting is crucial for longevity, bone health, mobility, joint support, brain stimulation, and counteracting forward shoulders and tech neck.

Stretch after your cardio and strength sessions to stay flexible – and stretch before bed.

2. Mental Growth: Embrace Life Beyond the Screen

Set a timer to reduce screen time, social scrolling, late night binge watching.

Get to bed earlier.

Get outdoors in the am for a sunrise run or walk.

Reconnect with family, friends and neighbors.

Read more books to enlighten your mind, and get smarter.

Use this extra time to pursue your goal or passion-why wait any longer?

The Bottom Line

Life is flying by and could change overnight. There is so much to offer beyond our many screens that steal attention from our life, relationships.

Go the extra mile, starting today as you read this.

Stop the atrophy of your body, brain and goals.

Your future self will thank you.

Promise.

To your health and vitality,

Amy

What people say...

“I wanted to drop you a quick note of update and thanks for your invaluable lessons in Chi Running.  I ran the Urbanathlon in Chicago a couple weeks ago–12 mile obstacle course–and finished stronger than I could have dreamed.  The friends I thought would have to wait for me, well, I was practically dragging them the whole last hour.  Mile 10 was done on the stairs at the Bears football stadium and while others were fading, wheezing or throwing up, I ran the stairs two at a time.  Though I waited for my friends and finished with them this year, next year they’d better keep up or I’m leaving them.  And not a hint of knee pain the entire race. I couldn’t have done it without you or Chi Running.”
